A plan for our new app
From John
I posted this as a link to a Word file attachment on Friend Feed. I am posting it here because it is longer than FriendFeed’s 350-character limit.
John Kay’s plan for our mobile app for news
April 16, 2010 at 11:15 a.m.
- People are switching more and more to getting their news on mobile devices; therefore, we propose news app for mobile devices.
- People want news customized for their likes and needs; therefore, we propose a news app that uses algorithms similar to those of Hunch.com and that is accessed through a thumb print on the screen.
- People want news that includes content that is pertinent to their physical location; therefore, we propose a news app with powerful geo-location abilities.
Because the product is mobile, because it delivers the news that each unique consumer wants, and because it knows where users are, I propose the name News Compass. A compass knows people’s locations. A compass helps people regain their bearings. A compass points in the right direction, and a compass is about the size of a cell phone.
friendfeed
Here’s the link to our friendfeed site:

I think this platform is better for a collaborative project because comments are more visible, posts can be “ranked” and moved to the top, and we can easily share links and files.
Please check it out and let me know your thoughts.

New name after second location for an app like Hunch
From John
Our new name will have to correlate with the main features that we select. Here are some possible names for an app that works like Hunch.com.
FIRST CHOICES:
Mobile News Butler (butlers who know what their employer’s like and bring it to them)
SECOND CHOICES:
News We Know YOU Like
News You Are Expecting
News You Were Not Expecting
Premonition Press (“premonition” is related to “hunch”)
Narcissistic News
Ted Turner and Hunch
New name after second presentation about an app focusing on writing sytle
From John
Our new name will have to correlate with the main features that we select. Here are some possible names for an app focusing on the tumbled pyramid and troller writing style:
FIRST CHOICES:
Run and Go Deep Mobile News (football analogy)
Mobile News Your Way
News Explorer (like a submarine that does down deeply to find treasure)
SECOND CHOICES:
Down the Hall Mobile News
Mobile News Treasure Finder
Mobile News Discoverer
New name after second presentation for an app with geo-location
Our new name will have to correlate with the main features that we select. Possible names for an app focusing on geo-location:
FIRST CHOICES:
On the Spot News
News Where I Am
News on My Turf
Mobile Ground News
Go To News
News on the Street
My News Guide
SECOND CHOICES:
News on My Territory
Journalist in a Box
Here I Am (also a good hymn)
P.S. Every time I hear “geo-location,” I think of one of Jonathan’s learning video games that teaches that owls use the “echo-location” hearing system to pinpoint locations
Post Presentation
From John (updated Thursday at 8:22 a.m.)
Dear New Journalists:
Don’t despair: we still have our paper to correct our biting off more than we can chew. Dave said that our app should be like Hunch.com with a powerful geo-locator. Dean said that our app should be super fast or slow, in the sense of having archived news stories. Dean said that it would be great if it could send out a question to people within a 5-mile radius.
Thank you Aline for speaking and speaking well. I would have like to have heard everyone in our group answer questions, though.
Keep your heads up everyone!
4/14 Presentation
From Samuel
Here are some points we discussed on 4/14 during put presentation. Please address me if I missed anything or said something wrong.
Who will be contributing? Carol answered: contracting with big media, reliable news source
John mentioned tumbled writing style.
How do we maintain our profit? Aline answered: depends on who is the producer
Dave: we care about content management, he pointed out why it is a better way to produce one to two features. Don’t mind to go to different-feature app.
John mentioned the purpose: to develop enthusiastic of the news. Example: game
Dean’s idea: 1. space issue. I forgot what he said anything else.
This is all I jot down on my notes. I’m sure there are still more points we discussed.
